Plants, shrubs trees, for sandy soils and coastal sites.

See gardening with grasses.

Sandy soils are well aerated and very free draining, they warm up quickly in spring giving plants a quicker start into growth. There is a price to pay for this advantage, they are both thirsty and hungry thus will need regular watering and applications of fertilizers.

Plants that thrive on sandy soils are often accustomed to low nutrients and drought in their natural habitat. This soil can be improved by adding plenty of nutrient rich organic matter and to give additional plant food in the form of balanced, preferably slow release fertilizer. Mulch and enrich the soil to help reduce evaporation of water from the soil surface and avoid extreme fluctuations in surface temperature which could harm plant roots. Covering the top with sontes can infact cause more harm then good as the reflected heat can burn leaves and the transferd heat can burn top roots. So be carful when top dressing and watch for this effect. See also our sunny sites article.
